Our second new resource is in your school now!

Our Smokefree School - He Kura Auahi Kore is the practical planning guide you have been asking for.

In this issue

New Practical Guide for Principals and BoTs

Our Smokefree School/He Kura Auahi Kore - a practical guide to being a smokefree community is a new planning guide designed to support all schools to embrace the smokefree/auahi kore kaupapa.  It contains practical advice for principals and Boards of Trustees on how to take small steps or make major change towards embedding smokefree lifestyles into the culture of the school.

The guide includes tools to help the school community create a profile of beliefs, attitudes and behaviours in relation to being smokefree/auahi kore.  The information enables schools to plan and set goals for the school's smokefree/auahi kore journey.

It has been sent to over 2,700 schools so you might like to put it on the agenda of your next Board of Trustees meeting.  You can check out the guide here and also order additional free copies from Kath Blair.

Extra copies of both new school resources are available and free

In addition to the new practical guide above, a teaching resource for Years 7 & 8 students was sent to schools in July. Staying Smokefree Te Noho Auahi Kore is designed to help students develop resilience and decision-making skills about being smokefree/auahi kore.

If you are a health promoter working with schools and would like your own copy of these new Smokefree resources, contact Kath Blair or go to the Smokefree Schools website.

If you work in a school and need more copies of either resource, please contact Kath Blair.

What teachers are saying about the new teaching resource for Years 7 & 8 students

Here is just some of the great feedback from teachers and schools ...

  • I have been using the resource with my Year 8 Health class.  The girls LOVED it and really enjoyed working through the stories at their own pace.  The [audio stories] CD was a great supplement for those who were poor readers or preferred listening!!
  • We would do this as a whole school and so we are talking about over 400 students. I think the resource is just lovely and will have huge appeal to our kids.

  • I have just received my copy of the resource.  It is just great – well done. Finally a resource for this age group.

  • Have just been reading the stories that come with the Years 7 & 8 resource.  I love the one titled Fast Forward!  What a great idea to set it in the future as if being smokefree is the normal for NZ.  I think it will also make kids think of all the changes that were introduced from 1988 – it made me think too.

NZSTA 2011 conference

Smokefree/Auahi Kore Schools was proud to be the platinum partner (fourth year running) at the recent NZSTA conference in Auckland.  This conference is an important opportunity to get feedback from principals and school trustees about the issues in schools and how we can help.

It was especially interesting hearing about the challenges and rewards of supporting young people to be smokefree.  We had many proud delegates telling us that all their school staff are smokefree - fantastic!  We also received questions about smoking cessation support for school staff.  If you are wondering what your school can do, the Smokefree Schools website lists all the people and places you can access for quitting support.

Two trustees (pictured) from Manaia View School in Whangarei proudly displayed their auahi kore branded shirts while visiting our exhibition stand.  Good work Manaia View School!
